Pacific City Fishing Dory Beach Launch

As an Oregon native, I have fond memories of watching the Pacific City Dory fleet launch through the surf from the beach at Cape Kiwanda.  It was an awesome site to watch as a child.  Unfortunately, it's a sight not often seen thanks to the effects of polution and overfishing - still continuing with the Asian commercial trawlers with their giant nets depleting the salmon heading back to our coastal rivers and streams.  With the stiff regulations and skyrocketing costs for commercial fishing along the Pacific Northwest coast, there are only a small handful of commercial dory fishermen still in the game.

But every now and then you can still see a dory launch from the beach at Cape Kiwanda.  Many of the dories you see launching these days are piloted by sport fishermen - proof the dory is a worthy and stable craft for ocean fishing.  And the video below is a great example of the type of dory used in the Pacific City fleet of old.  And from the look of the catch in the hold, fishing this day was very good.  There's a nice bunch of Silvers to behold.

Fishing Dory Launches In Surf - Pacific City, Oregon

I couldn't help myself.

Here's a typical commercial fishing dory beach landing after a day of fishing.
