I am your Captain Commercial fishing in Alaska

Fishing in Alaska this summer on the Pillar Bay. The underwater shots were filmed in 1997 on the Jackie R from Gig Harbor Wash. The boat sunk the next year.

isnt that Sig Hansens Boat ? the Northwestern in the background at the dock?

vicious6667

as an ex commercial fisherman on the BC coast,, I can totally relate to everything in this video,, the only difference between canadian and amercian seiners is we use drums to spool our net aboard whereas you guys use the powerblock. also,, i think we can fish bigger boats,, wasnt the size limit on american salmon and herring seiners 55 feet at one time or has that changed since the 90s ? just curious

vicious6667

our biggest set was 130.000 lbs of Sockeye.. took 2 boats to brail out or net.. ours and another,, we can only holdf 80 thousand lb..we were deckloaded.. water coming up the scuppers..almost sunk.. hatchways open .. yikes!!,, gotta love the Johnstone Strait and 13 knot tide rips at Kelsey bay! woo-hoooo!!

That is the 420 Monks from Atlanta. They used to rehearse at my warehouse in Atlanta. The singer is Bonez from Stuck Mojo if you ever heard of them they were big in the 90's

I fished on the Jackie R in 1987 skippered by big Adam Ross Jr and only recently found out that she had sunk. I have very fond memories of my time spend on the Jackie R and also a boat owned by Randy Babbich called the Paragon!

I want to come to Alaska to do some commercial fishing too. Is it hard to get a job? and how much do they get paid in average?

If you think those are large sets, you should try cost recovery fishing for any of the many non-profit hatcheries up in AK. a 40,000 lb set was decent, but we had countless sets weighing in at over 100,000 lbs (with fish at a 15 lb average you can imagine what that looked like) heres to all the inseiners out there on the water. CHEERS!

Walk the docks, and if yer folks say yes, then you can go. My first skiffman was 17, and he was kinda retarded, but awesome too. good luck-Alaska is calling you home!
