As an Oregon native, I have fond memories of watching the Pacific City Dory fleet launch through the surf from the beach at Cape Kiwanda. It was an awesome site to watch as a child. Unfortunately, it's a sight not often seen thanks to the effects of polution and overfishing - still continuing with the Asian commercial trawlers with their giant nets depleting the salmon heading back to our coastal rivers and streams. With the stiff regulations and skyrocketing costs for commercial fishing along the Pacific Northwest coast, there are only a small handful of commercial dory fishermen still in the game.
Whether it's open ocean, bay, or river fishing for salmon - Pacific Northwest fishermen have long been using plug-cut herring for bait. Here in Oregon, plug-cut herring is the bait of choice when trolling for Salmon. However, many beginner and experienced fishermen are not used to using or rigging real bait for salmon, let alone plug-cut herring. It's important to rig a plug-cut herring so that it rolls properly at your trolling speed - resulting in a slow, tight roll that mimicks a wounded bait fish - something that Chinook salmon simply can't resist.
Here's a fairly good video showing an example of getting the perfect roll trolling for salmon with plug-cut herring. (...)
